The Shift in the Study of Ashkenazic and Sephardic Pilpul

Abstract

Despite a handful of significant articles examining pilpul and its definitions, terminology, parameters, and applications, the topic has been substantially neglected. In this study I critically review some of the previous approaches towards pilpul, to better define its terms, concepts, and principles. In addition, I will describe the shift away from pilpul in the Eastern lands, that occurred earlier than it occurred in Ashkenazic lands, already at the end of the 17th century. The transition can be established through various talmudic and halakhic writings which emerged from the school of R. Jacob Hagiz.
