Abstract

This article examines a sugya that appears in three places in the Babylonian Talmud: Bavli Sanhedrin (20a-20b), Bavli Moed Qatan (27a) and Bavli Nedarim (56a-56b). After careful analysis and comparison, I demonstrate that the sugya in Bavli Sanhedrin and Moed Qatan is one and the same; however, in Bavli Nedarim there are a number of variants that cannot be explained by scribal errors. Comparing the sugya to the parallel in the Yerushalmi I come to the conclusion that the original Babylonian sugya is preserved in Bavli Sanhedrin and Moed Qatan, and the editors of the sugya in Nedarim have been influenced by the parallel in the Yerushalmi. It is this influence that caused changes to be made in the sugya in Bavli Nedarim and explain its present form.
